The leading art museum of New Hampshire, opened in 1929 in a Beaux-Arts building in a residential neighbourhood of Manchester, founded through the bequest of former governor Moody Currier and his wife Hannah. Its collection spans European and American art from the medieval period to the present: early Italian panels, Old Master paintings, French Impressionists, American painting and folk art, New England furniture and silver, and modern and contemporary work, shown in galleries around a light-filled winter garden with a cafe. The museum also owns and tours the Zimmerman House, a small brick-and-glass Usonian home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1950, which has been described as the only Wright house in New England open to the public; tours leave by museum shuttle and must be booked. The museum has since acquired a second Wright house nearby (confirm whether it is on tour). Enlarged several times, most recently with a modern wing in the 2000s, the museum is about a mile from downtown and the Amoskeag Millyard, and makes a relaxed visit of two to three hours.
