Curzon Hall
Historic Site · Dhaka, Dhaka
The architectural showpiece of Dhaka University: a 1904 Indo-Saracenic set piece in red brick - domed pavilions, horseshoe arches and long arcaded wings - built as a town hall in the Curzon era, absorbed by the university at its 1921 founding, and home ever since to the science faculty. It is also Language Movement ground: the 1948 declaration that Urdu alone would be the state language was defied by students here, the opening act of the road to 1952 and ultimately 1971. It remains a working academic building - the honest visit is facade, arcades and grounds, with interiors belonging to the classes inside them.

Open university grounds: the forecourt and exteriors are effectively visitable through daylight hours daily, free, with academic terms bringing life and Fridays bringing quiet; official events, exams and campus disturbances can close access without notice - a tea-stall ask on arrival settles the day's mood.
