Cusarare

A Raramuri Highland Village With A Small 30 M Waterfall At The End Of A Short Walk, A Restored 18th Century Jesuit Mission Church, A Crafts Museum And A Landscape Of Pine Forest And Rock Formations On The Road From Creel. A Half Day Trip From Creel, Stronger In The Rains Of Summer · Creel, Chihuahua

Cusarare is a small Raramuri village in the pine and rock country of the Sierra Tarahumara, about 22 km from Creel on a road that is paved for much of the way and gravel near the end. Its main sights are an 18th-century Jesuit mission church with a plain, honest interior, a small museum of Raramuri crafts and the Cusarare waterfall, a short walk through forest from the village. The fall is about 30 m and carries real water only after the summer rains, from July to September; in the dry months it shrinks to a thin ribbon. Raramuri families sell baskets, violins, wooden dolls and woven pine-needle work from stalls near the church, and buying from them is the best way to leave something in the village. It suits travellers already in Creel who want a half-day outing with people and landscape together. It is worth the trip in the green season or for the crafts, and not worth it in spring if you only want a big waterfall. Nights are cool all year. The village paths and the church exterior are open at all hours and cost nothing to look at, so walking the village is FREE. The mission church is usually open in daylight hours but can be CLOSED when no one is on hand, and services take priority over visitors. The crafts museum keeps short daytime hours and is often CLOSED on Sundays or at midday, so confirm in Creel. The waterfall path may carry a small community fee, commonly paid at a gate or to a villager. Craft sellers set out stalls from mid-morning and pack up before dark. Hours here are informal, so confirm locally before you commit a full day.
