Custer State Park
Subnational Park · Custer, South Dakota
Seventy-one thousand acres in the Black Hills - South Dakota's first and largest state park, established in 1912, and the equal of a good national park in everything but name. It holds a free-ranging herd of about 1,400 bison, the Needles Highway with its granite spires and one-lane tunnels, and the Wildlife Loop Road, where the bison genuinely stop the traffic. The begging burros are descendants of a herd once used to carry visitors up Black Elk Peak.
13329 US Highway 16A, Custer, South Dakota, 57730, United States
Open year round. ⚠ A SOUTH DAKOTA PARK ENTRANCE LICENCE IS REQUIRED and is charged per vehicle, valid for several days - this is not a free state park. Visitor centres, lodges and the swimming areas are seasonal. THE BUFFALO ROUNDUP in late September closes parts of the park to traffic for the morning and draws tens of thousands of spectators. Needles Highway and Iron Mountain Road close in winter snow.
