Cuyutlan and the Green Wave

A Quiet Black Sand Beach Village Famous For The Green Wave (Ola Verde), A Huge Breaker That Arrives In April And May And Looks Green In The Sun, And For Salt Works On Its Lagoon And A Small Salt Museum. Strong Currents Make The Sea Dangerous, And The Village Is Quiet Except At Easter And In The Surfing Seasons · Armeria, Colima

Cuyutlan is a quiet black-sand beach village on the Colima coast, about 45 km south-east of Manzanillo, with the Laguna de Cuyutlan behind it. The sand is dark volcanic grit that gets hot at midday, and the Pacific here is powerful. The village is known for the Green Wave (Ola Verde), a very large breaker that arrives in April and May and can look green in the sun, though its size and timing vary from year to year. Salt has been harvested on the lagoon for centuries, and the small Museo de la Sal explains the work with old tools and photographs. Boat trips on the lagoon show birds and the salt pans. It suits quiet travellers, families who enjoy a simple seafront and anyone curious about salt and big waves. It is worth a day from Manzanillo or Colima. It is not good for swimming: the rip tides are dangerous, and the village is very quiet except at Easter, when Mexican families fill it. Expect heat, simple hotels and early-closing kitchens.
