D.L. Bliss State Park
State Park · South Lake Tahoe, California
D.L. Bliss State Park is on the west shore of Lake Tahoe, just south of Emerald Bay State Park, which is a separate place. At an altitude of over 6,000 feet, it combines granite headlands, tall pines and cold, very clear water. Lester Beach and Calawee Cove give sandy and rocky swimming spots, and Rubicon Point marks the start of the Rubicon Trail, a shoreline path toward Emerald Bay - confirm length and condition. A campground sits among the trees - confirm size and season. The Balancing Rock, a huge boulder on a small pedestal, is a short walk away. In summer the park is a victim of its beauty: parking is limited, the beach has a visitor cap and the gate can close when full - confirm. Water stays cold even in August, so swims are short, and the quietest hours are early morning and late afternoon. Highway 89 closes or needs chains in winter storms, and bears are active, so food must be stored properly.

California State Parks has generally run this park as a seasonal summer destination, with day use from morning to around sunset and the campground open in the warmer months - confirm the current season, since access in winter may be limited, gated or closed entirely. Past construction and utility projects have restricted parts of the park for long periods, so check the State Parks page for closures before you plan a trip. In summer the parking lot and beach can reach capacity early, and staff may close the gate until cars leave - confirm the cap and whether a reservation is needed. Highway 89 along the west shore can close for snow, rock slides or fire, and the road is narrow and winding. Smoke from wildfires can also close beaches in late summer. Check conditions that morning.
