Daejeon

Science City And National Rail Hub; Host Of Expo 1993 · Daejeon, Daejeon

Daejeon is a city of about one and a half million people in the centre of South Korea, where the Gyeongbu and Honam rail lines meet, grown in the twentieth century from a railway town into the country's science capital. It hosted Expo 1993, and the Expo Science Park on the Gapcheon river, with the Hanbit Tower, sits beside the National Science Museum and the research institutes and universities of Daedeok Innopolis, among them KAIST. For many Korean visitors, though, the reason to stop is Sungsimdang, a bakery founded near Daejeon station in the 1950s whose flagship and station branch draw long queues for fried soboro buns and fruit cakes. Yuseong, in the west of the city, is an old hot spring district with a free public footbath. Around the city are the red clay barefoot trail of Gyejoksan, the metasequoia forest and skywalk of Jangtaesan, Hanbat Arboretum and the Daecheong Lake trails. The city is known for kalguksu noodles, is about an hour from Seoul by KTX and makes a good base for Gongju and Buyeo.

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The typical pattern: Sungsimdang's flagship and station branch open from early morning to late evening every day, with popular items selling out by afternoon. The National Science Museum opens about 9.30 am to 5.30 pm and usually closes on Mondays, with last entry about an hour before closing. Hanbat Arboretum opens daytime hours and has had weekly closing days for parts of the garden. The Yuseong footbath is outdoors with set daytime hours and may close in the coldest weeks or for cleaning; bathhouses open from early morning to late evening. The traps that ruin a day are Monday closures, the Sungsimdang queue before a KTX, the wrong Daejeon station, and planning around Expo park attractions that have closed. Confirm current times before relying on them.
