Daintree Rainforest and Cape Tribulation

UNESCO World Heritage Site: Wet Tropics Of Queensland (1988). The Oldest Continuously Surviving Tropical Rainforest On Earth, Older Than The Amazon, Reached By A River Ferry Crossing North Of Port Douglas, Where Rainforest Grows To The Edge Of The Sand At Cape Tribulation And The Reef And The Rainforest Meet · Cape Tribulation, Queensland

The Daintree is the oldest continuously surviving tropical rainforest on earth, older than the Amazon, and the stretch north of the Daintree River cable ferry is where that age is easiest to feel. Cross the river by ferry a short drive north of Port Douglas and the sealed road narrows, the canopy closes overhead, and lowland rainforest runs unbroken to the edge of the sand at Cape Tribulation, where reef and rainforest genuinely meet on the same horizon. Boardwalks at Jindalba, Marrdja and Dubuji keep feet dry over mangrove creeks and let ancient fan palms, strangler figs and the rare idiot fruit tree be seen without trampling root systems that took centuries to establish. Cape Tribulation's own beaches, Myall and the cove below the Kulki lookout, are swimmable only outside stinger season and only ever in the ocean, never in the river. Guided night walks turn up tree frogs, huntsman spiders and the occasional owl that daylight visitors never see. Beyond Cape Tribulation the sealed road ends and the Bloomfield Track, 4WD only, continues toward Cooktown through remote country.

North of Port Douglas across the Daintree River ferry crossing, running to Cape Tribulation where the rainforest meets the reef, Cape Tribulation, Queensland, Australia

The Daintree River ferry runs on demand roughly every few minutes from early morning to around midnight, the only crossing point since there is no bridge, and it closes overnight. Cape Tribulation's beaches and lookouts have no gate and are open around the clock, though walking the boardwalks after dark without a guide is not recommended. The Daintree Discovery Centre keeps standard daytime hours and has no fixed weekly closure day, but confirm around Christmas. Night walk tours run on a booked, weather-dependent basis most evenings and are sometimes cancelled outright after heavy rain, which also closes sections of road without warning in the wet season.
