Dak Nong Geopark and Krong No Caves
UNESCO Global Geopark (2020), A Landscape Of Extinct Volcanoes, Lava Tube Caves Such As The C7 Cave, Among The Longest Volcanic Cave Systems In South East Asia, Waterfalls And Coffee And Pepper Hills. A Newly Promoted Geopark On The Central Highlands Plateau With Few Facilities And Few Foreign Visitors. Best In The Dry Season For The Caves · Gia Nghia, Dak Nong
Dak Nong is a quiet highland province on the Cambodian border, and its Geopark, recognised as a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2020, covers the volcanic landscape around Krong No district. Basalt flows from extinct volcanoes cooled into some of the longest lava-tube cave systems known in Southeast Asia, including the C7 cave and several neighbours, plus waterfalls such as Dray Sap and Gia Long, forest at Nam Nung and red soil planted with coffee and pepper. The base is Gia Nghia, the provincial town. Cave tours need a local guide, a headlamp, boots and a helmet, and the floors are wet, rough and uneven. Facilities are few. It suits cavers, geology fans and travellers already in the Highlands, about three to four hours from Buon Ma Thuot. It is worth the detour in the dry months for the caves. It is not a place for a casual stop, a family with small children or anyone expecting lit walkways and cafes.
