Dalian Coast (Binhai Road and Xinghai Square)

Coastal Scenic Road Along The Yellow Sea Cliffs And One Of The Largest City Squares In The World · Dalian, Liaoning

The seafront of Dalian, a breezy port city on the tip of the Liaodong peninsula where wooded hills drop straight into the Yellow Sea. Binhai Road runs for some thirty kilometres around the coast, with a wooden plank trail clinging to the cliffs above the water, passing headlands, coves and the great suspension span of the Xinghai Bay bridge; walking or driving it is the classic thing to do here. It ends at Xinghai Square, an enormous circular plaza laid out in 1997 on reclaimed land and often called one of the largest city squares in the world, where a paved path of bronze footprints leads down to the sea and families fly kites in the wind. Along the coast are Tiger Beach with its ocean park, polar aquarium and cluster of stone tiger sculptures, the pine-covered islet of Bangchuidao and the sandy bay of Fujiazhuang, busy with swimmers in the short, bright summer. Inland the city keeps traces of its Russian and Japanese colonial decades in the buildings around Zhongshan Square, and the seafood - scallops, sea cucumber, cold noodles with raw fish - is among the best in northern China.
