Dalton Highway

Alaska Route 11; The Trans Alaska Pipeline Haul Road · Coldfoot, Alaska

A mostly gravel road of 414 miles from Livengood, north of Fairbanks, to Deadhorse at the Prudhoe Bay oil fields on the Arctic Ocean, built in 1974 as the haul road for the Trans-Alaska Pipeline and fully opened to the public in 1994. It crosses the Yukon River, passes the Arctic Circle sign at milepost 115, the truck stop at Coldfoot and the tiny town of Wiseman, climbs over the Brooks Range at Atigun Pass, and runs out across the tundra of the North Slope with the pipeline alongside. There are no services for about 240 miles between Coldfoot and Deadhorse. Trucks have priority, flying rocks break windscreens, and many rental companies ban their cars from it. In June 2025 flooding closed parts of the road and a culvert failure left an 80-foot washout at milepost 315, repaired to one lane under emergency work.
