Dara-e Ajdahar (Dragon Valley)
Rock Formation · Bamyan, Bamyan
A vast cleft ridge of rock a short drive west of Bamyan town that local tradition holds to be the petrified body of a dragon slain by Hazrat Ali — the long crack down its spine the sword-stroke, the mineral springs seeping from it the creature's tears, and a small shrine at its head. Geology reads a travertine ridge split along its crest; the legend reads better on site. It is Bamyan's classic half-day trip: a short scramble onto the ridge, the crack underfoot, valley views back toward the Koh-e Baba, and Hazara picnic parties on Fridays.
