A small Ivy League college in the riverside town of Hanover, chartered in 1769 by a royal charter from King George III and the ninth-oldest college in the United States. The campus is built around the Green, a big open lawn framed by white clapboard and brick buildings, with the colonial-revival Baker Library and its bell tower on the north side. In the library's lower-level reserve room is the best reason to stop: Jose Clemente Orozco's fresco cycle The Epic of American Civilization, painted in 1932 to 1934 and now a National Historic Landmark, free to walk in and see. Across the Green, the Hood Museum of Art has been free to all, with Assyrian palace reliefs, Native American art and a strong modern collection. The Appalachian Trail comes through town past the Green, the Connecticut River runs along the western edge with a student canoe club, and in February the Winter Carnival fills the Green with a snow sculpture. Visitors walk in at any time; campus tours are for prospective students, and a self-guided loop covers the highlights in two or three hours.

The Green, the outdoor campus and the Appalachian Trail through town are open at all hours, all year. Baker-Berry Library, where the Orozco murals are, is generally open to visitors during the day and into the evening in term time, with shorter hours in college breaks and closures on major holidays; it may ask visitors to sign in or limit access at exam time, so confirm before a special trip. The Hood Museum of Art is closed on Mondays in most weeks and keeps daytime hours with a late evening on some days; confirm the current schedule. Hopkins Center performances follow the academic year and the building has been under major renovation. The Ledyard canoe rentals run only in the warm months.
