The public aquarium of the Dauphin Island Sea Lab, Alabama's marine research and education institution, built around a single idea: the four habitats that make up the state's coast, from the Mobile-Tensaw Delta through Mobile Bay and the barrier islands out to the northern Gulf. It is small — around thirty tanks — and it is not trying to be Atlanta. What it does instead is explain one specific and unusually complicated coastline, and a boardwalk out over the living marsh does the rest.
