Dazaifu Tenmangu
Dazaifu Tenmangu, The Shrine Built Over The Grave Of The Scholar And Statesman Sugawara No Michizane, Honoured As The God Of Learning. The Leading Exam Luck Shrine Of Kyushu, With A Famous Plum Garden In February And A Long Shopping Approach. · Dazaifu, Fukuoka
Dazaifu Tenmangu is the shrine built over the grave of Sugawara no Michizane, a Heian scholar and minister who was exiled to Dazaifu in 903 and later honoured as Tenjin, the god of learning. That is why students arrive with exam wishes, ema plaques and charms, above all in spring. You cross an arched bridge over a pond shaped like the character for heart, walk beneath thousands of plum trees and reach a main hall rebuilt in the late 16th century. The approach street of rice-cake shops is half the pleasure. It is an easy half day from Fukuoka, about 30 minutes by Nishitetsu train, and it suits families, students, couples and anyone who wants a shrine with real daily life around it. It is worth the detour in the plum season and at New Year, though both bring heavy crowds. In quiet months it is a pleasant but modest stop. The hall was under a temporary roof structure during restoration some years ago, so confirm what you will see.

The shrine grounds are open daily from early morning until the evening, roughly 06:00 to 19:00 with earlier closing in winter - confirm. Entry to the grounds is free, while the treasure hall and some garden areas charge a small fee. The shrine office, charm counter and shops keep shorter hours, often closing around 17:00 to 18:30. Reach it by Nishitetsu train from Fukuoka Tenjin to Nishitetsu-Futsukaichi, then the Dazaifu line to Dazaifu Station - about 30 minutes, with some direct services in season. The shrine is a short walk from the station. Cash is still common at stalls. No booking is needed, but New Year and exam season mean queues.
