Deadwood

Old Town · Deadwood, South Dakota

A gold rush town in a Black Hills gulch that boomed from 1876 to 1879 and reached twenty-five thousand people, and where Wild Bill Hickok was shot dead holding aces and eights. The whole city is a National Historic Landmark District. In 1989 South Dakota legalised gambling here specifically to pay for restoration, which is why the Victorian brick main street is intact and why there is a slot machine behind most of the historic facades.

Main Street, Deadwood, South Dakota, 57732, United States

The town is open at all times and FREE to walk. Individual museums, tours and attractions keep their own hours, and several contract sharply in winter. ⚠ THE CASINOS ARE OPEN AND LEGAL - Deadwood has had legalised gambling since 1989, and that money funds the historic preservation. The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in early August fills the town completely.
