Deception Pass State Park

Subnational Park · Oak Harbor, Washington

The most visited state park in Washington, 3,854 acres spread over nine islands either side of the strait that George Vancouver named in 1792 after being fooled into thinking Whidbey was a peninsula. The two-span 1935 bridge crosses 180 feet above a tidal race that runs at up to eight knots, throwing standing waves and whirlpools that are visible from the deck. Much of what visitors use - trails, shelters, walls - was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s.

41229 State Route 20, Oak Harbor, Washington, 98277, United States

Open year round, generally 6:30 AM to dusk, with campgrounds open all year and some loops closed in winter. A Washington State Discover Pass is required for day parking. The park is spread across nine islands and several separate entrances - Bowman Bay, Rosario, North Beach and West Beach each have their own car parks, and the busiest fill by late morning in summer.
