Decorated Farmhouses of Halsingland

UNESCO World Heritage Site (2012): Seven Large Timber Farmhouses Whose Rooms Were Painted For Feasts In The 18th And 19th Centuries, From The Wealthy Flax And Forest Farming Of Halsingland · Jarvso, Gavleborg County

The Decorated Farmhouses of Halsingland (Halsingegardar) are big timber farmhouses in central Sweden whose rooms were painted, floor to ceiling, for feasts. In the 18th and 19th centuries, farmers in Halsingland grew rich on flax, linen and later timber, and they showed it off by building far more house than they needed, with grand party rooms kept for weddings and holidays and painted by travelling painters, many from Dalarna. UNESCO listed seven farms in 2012: Kinstagarden in Jarvso, Gastgivars in Vallsta, Pallars and Jon-Lars near Alfta, Erik-Anders in Asta near Soderala, Bommars in Letsbo and Bortom Aa at Fagelsjo. Visitors come for the painted rooms, with flowers, biblical scenes and fantasy landscapes, and for the rural valleys around Jarvso. The honest caveats: several farms are private homes, most open only in summer and often by guided tour, they lie far apart so you need a car, and a visit takes planning rather than a quick stop.

Seven farms across Halsingland - among them Kinstagarden in Jarvso, Gastgivars in Vallsta and Erik-Anders in Asta - with Jarvso as the usual base, Jarvso, Gavleborg County, Sweden

There is no single site or ticket. Each farm has its own rules: some, such as Gastgivars, Erik-Anders and the Fagelsjo museum farm, are usually open to visitors in summer, roughly late June to mid-August, with guided tours at set times; others are private homes that open only on special days or to booked groups, and Kinstagarden and Pallars have often been among the hardest to see - confirm which farms are open this year before you plan the route. Outside summer, most painted rooms are closed. Book tours through the farms themselves or the Halsingland tourist offices, and expect July slots to fill. Getting there: SJ trains on the main northern line stop at Bollnas and Jarvso, roughly 3-4 hours from Stockholm, and X-trafik runs regional trains and buses, but the farms are scattered across a region about 150 km wide, so a car is needed to see more than one.
