Deep Creek Lake

Resort Area · McHenry, Maryland

Maryland's largest lake, in the high country of Garrett County at the far western end of the state — man-made in 1925 by damming Deep Creek for hydroelectric power, and now the only genuine four-season resort area Maryland has. It is above two thousand feet, it gets real snow, and Wisp on the ridge above is the state's only downhill ski resort. In summer the same water is boats, docks and rental houses. The rest of Maryland is two and a half hours and about fifteen degrees away.

Garrett Highway, McHenry, Maryland, 21541, United States

A four-season resort area, accessible year round. LODGING IS OVERWHELMINGLY PRIVATE RENTAL HOUSES booked through local agencies, with minimum stays in peak periods and the best properties gone months ahead. Wisp ski resort operates roughly December to March depending on snow and snowmaking; the Adventure Sports Center whitewater course runs a seasonal schedule and sessions are booked ahead. Boat hire is summer-seasonal. Deep Creek Lake State Park charges a service fee, higher for out-of-state visitors.
