Deep Ellum
Nightlife District · Dallas, Texas
Thirty square blocks just east of downtown Dallas, founded in 1873 and named for the local pronunciation of Deep Elm. In the 1920s it was one of the South's great blues and jazz districts, where Blind Lemon Jefferson, Leadbelly and Bessie Smith played the clubs along Elm Street. Today it holds four hundred businesses, twenty-five or so live music venues and a mural programme that has turned the whole neighbourhood into an open-air gallery.
