Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park
State Park · Crescent City, California
Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park lies in Del Norte County along Highway 101 just south of Crescent City on the far northern California coast, and it is one of the state parks that make up Redwood National and State Parks, which has its own separate live entry. Old-growth redwoods grow on steep slopes that drop toward a rocky Pacific coast, so you can walk from deep forest shade to a cold, foggy shoreline in one trip. The Damnation Creek Trail is the best-known walk, a steep trail down to a rocky beach - confirm length and condition - and other viewpoints and beaches such as Wilson Creek Beach and Footsteps Rock are nearby - confirm access. A campground serves overnight visitors - confirm size and booking. Fog and rain are the norm, and Highway 101 here is steep and curving. It suits hikers and photographers who accept grey, wet weather, and it is a poor choice for a sunny beach day or anyone short of time.

California State Parks has generally kept the park open from around sunrise to sunset for day use, with the campground following its own check-in times - confirm current hours, trailhead parking and whether a kiosk is staffed. Weather decides the day: morning fog often sits in the redwoods until late, rain is common outside summer, and storms can drop branches or whole trees onto trails and the highway. Trails to the beach can close for slides, washouts or high water, and Highway 101 can be reduced to one lane after a slide. Parts of Redwood National and State Parks are managed together, so check the combined alerts and road status on the morning you drive. Services are in Crescent City, a short drive north.
