Delaware Agricultural Museum and Village
Nonprofit Museum Of Delaware And Delmarva Farm History, Founded In The 1970s, With An Exhibit Hall And A Recreated 1890s Rural Village On The North Side Of Dover · Dover, Delaware
The Delaware Agricultural Museum and Village tells the story of farming in the First State, from horse-drawn plows to the poultry houses that now dominate the Delmarva landscape. Founded in the 1970s, it sits on US 13 on the north side of Dover, across the highway from Delaware State University and a short drive from Dover Motor Speedway. The main exhibit hall holds tractors, wagons and farm machinery, tools for dairying, canning and orchard work, and a section on the broiler chicken industry, which began in Sussex County in 1923 when Cecile Steele of the Ocean View area raised a flock to sell for meat rather than eggs. Behind the hall is a recreated 1890s rural village of moved and rebuilt buildings, including a farmhouse, a one-room schoolhouse, a blacksmith shop, a mill and a church. The village is the heart of the visit but is seasonal and is staffed mainly on open days and for events. It is a modest, volunteer-supported place, best for families, school groups and anyone curious about rural Delaware, and an easy hour or two before or after other stops in Dover.

Open days are limited, and they change, so check before you go. The museum has generally been open on a few days a week, from about mid-week to Saturday, with daytime hours that end in the mid-afternoon, and closed early in the week - usually Sunday and Monday, and sometimes Tuesday. The outdoor village is seasonal: it has typically been open from spring to autumn, with the buildings unlocked and interpreted mainly on open days and during events, and it may be closed or limited from about late autumn to early spring. Special events such as a spring farm festival, harvest programs and holiday events can bring different hours; confirm the names and dates on the museum's calendar. The museum closes on major holidays and may close for bad weather or private rentals. Groups and school visits are booked in advance and can take over the village on weekday mornings. Race weekends at Dover Motor Speedway and big events at Delaware State University jam US 13 nearby, so allow extra time on those days. Confirm everything with the museum before you drive over.
