Delaware Children's Museum
Private Non Profit Children'S Museum On The Wilmington Riverfront, Opened In 2010, With Hands On Science, Technology, Engineering And Math Galleries For Young Children And Their Families · Wilmington, Delaware
The Delaware Children's Museum is a hands-on museum for young children on the Christina River in Wilmington, a large, bright building at the south end of the Riverfront district that opened in 2010. It is built around science, technology, engineering and math, but in a form small children can use: galleries such as a big indoor climbing structure that rises through the building, a water-play area with channels, locks and floating toys, a money-themed gallery where children play at banking and shopping, and building and engineering zones with blocks, ramps and moving parts. Most exhibits suit children from toddlers to about ten, and there are separate spaces for babies and the very young. It is noisy, busy and made for touching everything, and parents should expect to follow along rather than wander off, since every child must be with an adult. A visit fits neatly into a Riverfront day: the Riverwalk runs past the door, the DuPont Environmental Education Center and its marsh boardwalk are a short walk south, and Frawley Stadium, home of the Wilmington Blue Rocks, is next door.

The museum is open during daytime hours most days of the week but has been closed on at least one weekday, often Monday, for much of the year, and it closes on major holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas; confirm current days before you drive. Hours and open days usually expand in summer and during school breaks. Entry may be by timed ticket or advance booking on busy days, and the building can reach capacity on rainy weekends and holidays, when walk-up visitors may have to wait or be turned away. Weekday mornings in the school year bring field trips and camp groups that fill some galleries until early afternoon. Special events, toddler mornings, sensory-friendly sessions and holiday programs run on their own schedule and can change regular hours or need separate tickets. Last admission is some time before closing, and the water gallery may close earlier for cleaning. Adults may not enter without a child and children may not enter without an adult. Parking is in nearby Riverfront lots and garages whose rules change on ballpark and event days.
