The Fairgrounds In Harrington That Host The Annual Delaware State Fair, A Ten Day Agricultural Fair Dating To 1920, And Other Events Through The Year · Harrington, Delaware

The Delaware State Fairgrounds spread along US 13 on the south side of Harrington, in the farm country of southern Kent County, and for about ten days every late July they hold the Delaware State Fair, the biggest single annual event in the state. The fair dates to 1920, when it began as the Kent and Sussex County Fair, and at heart it is still an agricultural show: livestock barns full of dairy and beef cattle, pigs, sheep, goats, rabbits and poultry, 4-H and FFA shows where young farmers exhibit animals they have raised, and halls of vegetables, baking, quilts and crafts judged for ribbons. Around that sit the parts most visitors come for - a midway of rides and games, a long row of fair food, and grandstand concerts with national acts, ticketed separately, along with motorsport nights such as demolition derbies and tractor pulls. Harrington Raceway and Casino, with harness racing and slots, shares the grounds next door. Outside fair week the grounds are quiet and used for shows, auctions and smaller events. Expect heat, crowds and farm smells in July.

SEASONAL: the Delaware State Fair runs for about ten days in late July each year, and that is the only time the full fair - barns, exhibits, midway and grandstand - is open. Confirm the exact dates for the year; they are announced well ahead. During the fair the gates have opened in the morning and stayed open until late evening, with the midway running into the night and exhibit halls and barns closing earlier (confirm the posted times). Grandstand concerts and motorsport nights are separately ticketed events with their own gate times. Livestock shows follow a published schedule, so a particular breed or 4-H class may be shown only on one day. Midway rides stop for lightning and high wind. Outside fair week the grounds are not a public attraction: they open only for specific shows, auctions and events, each with its own hours. Harrington Raceway and Casino next door keeps its own year-round hours and a separate racing season.
