Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area

National Recreation Area · Bushkill, Pennsylvania

Forty miles of the Middle Delaware River and roughly seventy thousand acres of the ridges on either side of it, protected in 1965 after a dam project was authorised, fought over and eventually abandoned. The Pennsylvania side holds the tallest waterfall in the state, a chain of smaller falls in shaded ravines, the McDade Trail along the river, and a nineteenth-century village left standing. It is the closest large piece of protected country to New York and Philadelphia, which is both why it is busy and why the busy parts are very busy indeed.

1978 River Road, Bushkill, Pennsylvania, 18324, United States

Open daily, year round, from dawn to dusk. Visitor centres keep seasonal hours and several close entirely in winter. Dingmans Falls Visitor Center and its boardwalk are seasonal and the access road closes in winter. Some day-use areas charge a per-vehicle amenity fee in season.
