Delta Meadows

State Park · Walnut Grove, California

Delta Meadows is a small, undeveloped state park beside the Sacramento River in the Delta, close to the historic town of Locke and Walnut Grove. It is a place of sloughs, tule marsh, willows and riparian woods, a glimpse of what this country looked like before levees and farms reshaped it. There is no visitor centre and nothing built for crowds, and the best way to see it is by kayak or canoe, drifting through quiet side channels where herons, egrets and wintering waterfowl feed. Land access is limited and may be unmarked - confirm where you can legally enter. It suits paddlers and birders with navigation skills and patience, not families after a picnic. Mosquitoes, summer heat and tule fog are all part of the picture, and you should bring every drop of water. Expect few other people, no signs explaining the place and no rangers on hand, so a first visit goes better with a printed map and a partner. Nothing here is a set attraction, which is exactly its appeal.

As a primitive park with no developed entrance or gate, Delta Meadows has no staffed opening or closing time, and State Parks has generally expected day use during daylight hours - confirm the current rules and whether any area is closed. Practical hours are set by light, tide and weather: tule fog in winter can last until late morning, summer afternoons are hot, and tidal flow changes how easy it is to paddle in and out of the sloughs. The nearby town of Locke and its shops keep their own days and hours, and many are open mainly on weekends. There are no facilities in the park, so check the State Parks page and local road and water conditions before you set out.
