Depoe Bay
Beach Town · Depoe Bay, Oregon
A town of about fifteen hundred built around a six-acre harbour that it promotes as the world's smallest navigable harbour, connected to the ocean by a channel roughly fifty feet wide cut through basalt and crossed by a 1927 bridge. Resident gray whales feed just offshore from spring to autumn, close enough to watch from the seawall on the main street, which makes this one of the few places anywhere you can see whales without leaving the pavement.
418 Southwest Coast Avenue, Depoe Bay, Oregon, 97341, United States
The seawall and the harbour are public, open at all times and FREE. The Whale Watching Center on the seawall is run by Oregon State Parks, is free and keeps its own seasonal hours - generally daily in the warmer months and reduced days in winter. ⚠ RESIDENT GRAY WHALES FEED OFFSHORE FROM ROUGHLY MARCH TO OCTOBER and are visible from the seawall, with migration peaks in late December and March. Charter boats run through the channel and are cancelled in rough conditions. US 101 runs through the town centre; parking is limited and fills in season.
