Derinkuyu Underground City

A Multi Level Underground City Carved Into Soft Volcanic Tuff, With Air Shafts, Stables, Wine Presses, A Church And Rolling Stone Doors, Descending About Eight Levels And Once Able To Shelter Thousands Of People. The Deepest And Best Known Of The Cappadocian Underground Cities, Close To The World Heritage Sites Of Goreme · Derinkuyu, Nevsehir

Derinkuyu Underground City lies beneath the town of Derinkuyu in central Cappadocia, about 30 km south of Nevsehir and 10 km from its smaller sister city Kaymakli. Visitors descend narrow tuff passages through a hidden world of stables, kitchens, wine presses, storerooms, a church and a meeting room, and the complex is usually described as reaching about 55-60 m down across roughly eight levels, of which only some are open (confirm). Many scholars link its great enlargement to Byzantine communities who sheltered here from raiders, although the first chambers may be far older, and rolling stone doors could seal each level from inside. Long vertical shafts, which also served as wells, kept the air breathable for thousands of people. The route is a one-way loop of low ceilings, steep steps and cool still air, and it is among the most memorable hours in Turkiye. The town above is a working farm and market centre with simple cafes. Tour buses arrive from late morning, and hours and prices change (confirm).

Derinkuyu is a ticketed site, normally open daily all year, with longer hours from spring to autumn (roughly 08:00 to 17:00 or 19:00) and shorter winter hours, and a last entry about an hour before closing (confirm). The cafes, souvenir shops and car park outside keep their own hours. Parts of the lower levels may close for conservation, so ask at the gate which levels are open that season. Midday brings the largest tour groups, while the first hour and the last hour are the calmest. Confirm times locally before travelling, especially around religious holidays.
