Des Moines Art Center

Art Museum · Des Moines, Iowa

A modern and contemporary art museum in Greenwood Park, and one of the few small American museums whose building is as significant as its collection: three connected wings by Eliel Saarinen, I. M. Pei and Richard Meier, each a serious work by its architect and each in a different idiom. Admission is free. The museum also runs the John and Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Park downtown, four and a half acres of major outdoor sculpture, which is also free and open at all hours.

4700 Grand Avenue, Des Moines, Iowa, 50312, United States

⚠ FREE ADMISSION AND FREE PARKING, both of which surprise visitors at a museum of this standing — three connected wings by Eliel Saarinen (1948), I. M. Pei (1968) and Richard Meier (1985). ⚠ CLOSED MONDAYS. Special exhibitions and events are occasionally ticketed separately, so check what is on before assuming everything is free; general admission always is. Free guided tours and talks run on a published schedule and are worth taking for the architecture. ⚠ THE JOHN AND MARY PAPPAJOHN SCULPTURE PARK IS A SEPARATE SITE ABOUT FOUR MILES AWAY IN DOWNTOWN DES MOINES, not on the museum grounds — visitors routinely assume it is outside the building and miss it. It is free, open at all hours, and lit after dark, which is the better time to see it.
