Deschutes National Forest

National Forest · Bend, Oregon

Nearly 1.6 million acres along the eastern flank of the Cascades, from Mount Jefferson down past the Three Sisters to Newberry, and the reason Bend turned from a mill town into an outdoor city. It is drier and sunnier than the forests west of the crest - ponderosa pine and lodgepole rather than rainforest - which gives it a long season and some of the most reliable weather in the Cascades. The Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway runs through the heart of it past a chain of volcanic lakes under the Sisters.

FREE and open 24 hours a day, year round across nearly 1.6 million acres, but ⚠ THE CASCADE LAKES SCENIC BYWAY - the heart of the forest - IS CLOSED BY SNOW FROM ROUGHLY NOVEMBER TO LATE JUNE. ⚠ A CENTRAL CASCADES WILDERNESS PERMIT IS REQUIRED for day and overnight entry to much of the Three Sisters and Mount Jefferson wilderness in the summer season, booked in advance on recreation.gov, and the popular trailheads sell out within minutes of release. A Northwest Forest Pass is required at most developed trailheads, and Sno-Park permits at winter parking. Campgrounds are seasonal and fill months ahead.
