Desolation Sound Marine Provincial Park
One Of The Finest Boating Destinations In Canada, With Warm Saltwater, Hundreds Of Coves, Mountain Views, Oyster Beds, Seals And Eagles, And Campsites Reached By Kayak Or Boat. A Cruising And Paddling Park With No Road Access · Lund, British Columbia
Desolation Sound Marine Provincial Park lies at the northern end of the Sunshine Coast, beyond Lund and Powell River, in a maze of inlets, islands and granite coves where the Coast Mountains drop straight into the sea (confirm distances). It is among the most popular cruising and paddling areas in Canada, partly because the shallow bays warm in summer to some of the mildest saltwater north of Mexico, and partly because the peaks, oyster-covered rocks and quiet anchorages seem endless. The park has no road. Kayakers launch from Lund or Okeover Arm, and sailors arrive by sea, anchoring in coves such as Prideaux Haven and Tenedos Bay (confirm). The area is the traditional territory of the Tlaamin Nation and neighbouring peoples (confirm wording). Seals, eagles and oysters line the shore, and the nights are dark and starry. A marine camping fee applies in the park (confirm all prices and rules).
Desolation Sound Marine Provincial Park, a marine park north of Lund on the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia, accessible by boat from Lund and Powell River; coordinates approximate, Lund, British Columbia, Canada
The park is open all year, but the cruising and camping season runs from about May to September, with the warmest water in July and August and fewer boats from October to April. There are no gates, so you plan by tide, wind and daylight instead, and the water taxi and kayak outfitters at Lund and Okeover Arm keep seasonal hours (confirm). Camp fees are paid at an honour box or online, and some sites may need a booking in July and August (confirm). Winter storms and short days make the sound a serious place for small boats, with few services open.
