DeSoto Caverns

Show Cave · Childersburg, Alabama

A large onyx-marble cave near Childersburg whose main chamber is bigger than a football field and taller than a twelve-storey building, with the roof hung in formations that are still growing. It was written about in 1796 in what is generally described as the first published account of a cave in the United States, was mined for saltpetre in the Civil War and ran as a Prohibition speakeasy afterwards. It is now a family attraction: the cave tour is the real thing, and a park of paid outdoor add-ons has grown up around it.

5181 DeSoto Caverns Parkway, Childersburg, Alabama, 35044, United States

Open most days, generally 9 AM - 5 PM with extended summer hours and reduced winter days. Cave tours run roughly hourly and are guided only. The outdoor attractions are seasonal and priced separately from the cave.
