Detian Waterfall

Transnational Waterfall On The China Vietnam Border (Ban Gioc On The Vietnamese Side) · Chongzuo, Guangxi

A wide, multi-tiered waterfall on the Guichun River where it forms the border between China and Vietnam, in the karst hills of southwestern Guangxi. With its Vietnamese half, known as Ban Gioc, it is one of the largest transnational waterfalls in Asia, spilling in several broad white curtains over mossy limestone ledges into jade-green pools beneath forested peaks and rice fields. Bamboo rafts carry visitors across the plunge pools to the foot of the falls, close enough to feel the spray, while Vietnamese boats ply the opposite bank only metres away; a Qing-dynasty boundary stone stands on the hillside above. The flow is strongest in the summer rainy season, when the roar can be heard far off, and the surrounding valleys glow gold with ripening rice in autumn. Since 2024 a cross-border cooperation zone has let Chinese and Vietnamese visitors walk into the shared scenic area, though it is not open to other nationalities. Nearby, the Mingshi countryside of karst peaks and rivers is often compared to Yangshuo without the crowds.
