Detroit Historical Museum

History Museum · Detroit, Michigan

The Detroit Historical Museum stands on Woodward Avenue in the Cultural Center of Midtown Detroit, across the street from the Detroit Institute of Arts. It is the city's own history museum, run by the Detroit Historical Society. Its best-known galleries are Streets of Old Detroit, a recreated 19th-century streetscape you walk through, and America's Motor City, on the car industry and how the assembly line shaped the city. Other galleries cover the frontier years and the move to factories, and the city's music, sport and neighbourhood life. The society also runs the Dossin Great Lakes Museum on Belle Isle, a separate site. Admission is charged at standard rates, with free or reduced entry for residents of Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties - confirm current terms. The museum is closed on Mondays, so check days before you go. Allow one to two hours. It suits families, history fans and visitors pairing a morning here with the DIA and the Wright Museum.

The museum is generally open from mid-morning to late afternoon on most days of the week, and it is closed on Mondays. Some years it has also shortened Tuesday hours, and holiday closures apply, so confirm days and times with the Detroit Historical Society before you plan the trip. The Dossin Great Lakes Museum on Belle Isle keeps its own schedule and is not covered by a ticket here unless the society says so. Last entry is usually an hour or so before closing, and the lower-level Streets of Old Detroit gallery needs at least 30 minutes, so do not arrive late in the day and expect to see everything.
