Devils Punchbowl State Natural Area
Rock Formation · Otter Rock, Oregon
A hollow bowl of rock on the shoreline at Otter Rock, open to the sea on one side, formed when the roof of a sea cave collapsed. At high tide with a swell running the water enters through the gap and churns violently around the inside of the bowl, which is the whole spectacle; at low tide it drains and can be walked into from the beach. There is a viewpoint directly above it and a good tide pool area just north.
1st Street, Otter Rock, Oregon, 97369, United States
FREE and open daily, dawn to dusk, year round, with free parking and no admission. ⚠ THE TIDE GOVERNS EVERYTHING HERE: the bowl churns dramatically at high tide with swell and can be walked into at low tide, and those are opposite conditions - check a tide table and decide which visit you want before travelling. ⚠ DO NOT BE INSIDE THE BOWL ON A RISING TIDE. The stairs to the beach are steep and wet, and the surrounding basalt is slippery throughout.
