Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church
National Historic Landmark · Montgomery, Alabama
A small red-brick church a block from the Alabama State Capitol, where Martin Luther King Jr. served his first pastorate from 1954 to 1960 — he was twenty-five when he arrived. The Montgomery bus boycott was organised in its basement in December 1955, and the strategy meetings that followed were held in the same rooms. It is a National Historic Landmark and it is also an active congregation that has worshipped on this site since the 1880s, which is the fact that shapes how you visit.
454 Dexter Avenue, Montgomery, Alabama, 36104, United States
An active congregation. Guided tours on a limited weekday and Saturday schedule, reservations strongly advised and required for groups — book through the church rather than turning up. Sunday worship is open to visitors but is a service, not a tour.
