Deyrulzafaran Monastery, known in Syriac as Mor Hananyo, stands on a hillside about 6 km east of Mardin and is among the oldest living Christian sites in the region. Tradition places its founding in the 5th century (confirm), on the site of an older temple, and for several centuries the patriarchs of the Syriac Orthodox Church had their seat here before the seat moved away in the 20th century (confirm the years). The name means the Saffron Monastery and refers to the yellow tint of its sandstone. The complex has courtyards, a church with a carved wooden altar screen, a burial chamber of patriarchs, a vaulted underground room that may predate the monastery and the rooms of the former patriarchate. Visitors usually follow a guide through several of the rooms, and services are still held in the church in the Aramaic language of the Syriac tradition. The setting is quiet, with views over the plain, and the visit works best as a respectful half-hour to hour in the middle of a Mardin day.
