Dhaka
Capital Of Bangladesh And A Mughal Provincial Capital From 1608, Once Famous For Muslin Weaving, And Now One Of The Most Densely Populated Cities In The World · Dhaka, Dhaka
One of the most densely populated cities on earth, and it had fifteen rows here without one being the city. Dhaka was a Mughal provincial capital famous for muslin so fine it was traded across Asia, then a colonial river port, and it is now a metropolis of over twenty million that grew faster than any plan for it. The result is not a sightseeing city and pretending otherwise does visitors no favours: the traffic is among the worst anywhere, the air quality is frequently among the poorest measured, and there is no old quarter preserved for walking. What there is instead is intensity. Old Dhaka's lanes carry rickshaws three abreast past Mughal forts and river ghats where ferries load beyond any sane capacity, the rickshaw art is a recognised folk tradition, and the Parliament building is a major work by Louis Kahn. Come with realistic expectations, a driver, and time budgeted for traffic rather than distance.
