Dhakeshwari National Temple

Temple · Dhaka, Dhaka

The national temple of Bangladesh's Hindu community and the ritual heart of the country's Durga Puja: a walled compound near Bakshibazar holding the main Dhakeshwari shrine - "the goddess of Dhaka," whom legend ties to the city's very name - alongside a row of four Shiva temples by the pond. Founded by tradition in the twelfth century under Ballal Sen and rebuilt many times since, the present complex is less about ancient fabric than living centrality: state ceremonies, the biggest Puja crowds in the country, and a working devotional calendar that makes any ordinary visit an encounter with practice rather than a monument stop.

Dhakeshwari Road, Bakshibazar, Dhaka, Dhaka, Bangladesh

The compound keeps roughly dawn-to-evening hours daily with free entry; daily puja mornings and evenings, arati at dusk. Durga Puja season (September-October, lunar calendar) brings the national festival, screening and managed crowds - dates shift annually, verify locally.
