Dingle Peninsula

Ireland'S Westernmost Peninsula And An Irish Speaking Gaeltacht, With The Slea Head Drive (About 47 Km From Dingle), The Blasket Islands And The Conor Pass; Part Of The Wild Atlantic Way · Dingle, Kerry

The Dingle Peninsula, Corca Dhuibhne in Irish, is the westernmost peninsula of Ireland, a narrow finger of mountain, cliff and beach running some 50 km into the Atlantic from Tralee. Much of it is Gaeltacht, where Irish is the everyday language and road signs are in Irish only; Dingle town itself is officially An Daingean. It packs more early Christian and prehistoric stone into a small space than almost anywhere in Ireland: beehive huts, the boat-shaped Gallarus Oratory, promontory forts and ogham stones along the Slea Head Drive. People come for the coloured streets and music pubs of Dingle town, the views from Slea Head to the Blasket Islands, the Conor Pass, Inch beach and surf, and walking on Mount Brandon. The honest caveat: Fungie, the dolphin who made Dingle famous, disappeared in 2020 and has not come back, though some boats still sell dolphin trips; the Slea Head road is narrow and busy in July and August; and Atlantic fog can erase the views for days.

Dingle town and the Slea Head Drive loop (R559) west of it, reached from Tralee over the Conor Pass or by the N86 through Annascaul, Dingle, Kerry, Ireland

The peninsula is open all year; the Slea Head Drive, beaches and most viewpoints are free and unfenced. Seasonal sites include the Blasket Centre at Dunquin (roughly spring to autumn - confirm), the Great Blasket ferry (roughly April to September, weather permitting), and the beehive huts and small farm sites, which open in daylight in season. Dingle town is about 1 hour 15 minutes by car from Killarney and about 1 hour from Tralee, where the train from Dublin ends; Bus Eireann runs Tralee to Dingle several times a day (confirm times). Book rooms in Dingle well ahead for summer and festival weekends; the Blasket ferry sells out on fine days.
