Dixville Notch State Park
Narrow Mountain Notch On Route 26 In The Great North Woods With Table Rock And Huntington Cascades, Beside The Hamlet Famous For The Midnight First Votes Of The New Hampshire Presidential Primary; The Balsams Resort Nearby Is Closed (Confirm Current Status). · Dixville, New Hampshire
A small state park in a narrow, cliff-walled mountain pass on Route 26 in New Hampshire's Great North Woods, about 11 miles east of Colebrook and far north of the main White Mountains. The road squeezes between jagged rock spires and steep forested slopes, and short trails lead to the best-known sights: Table Rock, a narrow ledge jutting out high above the notch with sheer drops on three sides, and Huntington Cascades and Flume Brook, where mountain streams tumble through mossy ravines near roadside picnic areas. Just west of the notch lies the tiny hamlet of Dixville Notch, known across the country for casting the first votes of the New Hampshire presidential primary at midnight. Beside it stand the huge buildings of The Balsams, a grand resort hotel on Lake Gloriette that has been closed for years pending redevelopment; confirm its current status. The park has no staff and few services, and the nearest towns are a long drive, but moose are common along the road and the scenery is some of the wildest in the state.
