Dodge City
Heritage District · Dodge City, Kansas
The cattle town at the end of the Western Trail, and for a few years in the late 1870s the roughest place in the United States by reputation and possibly in fact — Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson and Doc Holliday all worked or drank here. Twenty years of Gunsmoke on American television turned the name into shorthand for the frontier, and the phrase about getting out of Dodge is now ordinary English. The town rebuilt Front Street in the 1950s as the Boot Hill Museum, and it is still one of the largest cattle-feeding centres on earth.
