Dogfish Head Milton Brewery

Production Brewery And Tasting Room Of Dogfish Head, The Delaware Craft Brewer Founded In Rehoboth Beach In 1995, In The Small Town Of Milton In Sussex County · Milton, Delaware

Dogfish Head began in 1995 as a small brewpub in Rehoboth Beach, opened by Sam Calagione and billed at the time as the smallest commercial brewery in the United States. It grew into one of the best-known craft brewers in the country on a line it calls off-centered ales, and brewing moved inland to this large production brewery in Milton, a small Sussex County town about 20 minutes from Rehoboth and Lewes. The Milton site is where most of the beer is made: 60 Minute and 90 Minute IPA, hopped continually through the boil, SeaQuench Ale, the autumn Punkin Ale and a long list of odd one-offs. Visitors come for the guided tours of the brewhouse, the tasting room and bar, and the lawn with the Steampunk Tree House, a large metal treehouse sculpture that is the brewery's landmark. The company also makes spirits under the Dogfish Head Distilling name. In 2019 Dogfish Head merged with the Boston Beer Company, which now owns it. You must be 21 with ID to taste, and since it is a drive from the beaches, someone in the group has to stay sober.

The brewery is open to visitors year round, with tours running daily, but the tasting room keeps its own hours that change by season and day of the week, so check the current schedule before you drive out. Tours are a mix of first-come first-served and online sign-up, and online booking is strongly advised: walk-up places are very limited and on summer weekends and holiday Mondays the popular times fill well ahead, which can mean an hour's drive for nothing. There are several tour types, from a short walk-through of roughly 30 minutes to longer guided tours of around an hour or more, plus specialty tours that cost more and run less often; confirm which ones run on the day you plan. Last admission to the tasting room and last tour of the day come well before closing. Everyone who tastes must be 21 or older with valid photo ID, checked every time. Holiday closures (Thanksgiving, Christmas and similar days) are likely, and private events can close parts of the site; confirm before you go. The lawn and the treehouse can be seen from the grounds during opening hours without a tour. The Rehoboth brewpub and the Chesapeake and Maine restaurant are separate places with their own hours.
