Dolly Sods Wilderness

Nature Preserve · Davis, West Virginia

A high plateau on the Allegheny Front, between roughly 2,600 and 4,000 feet, carrying an ecology that belongs several hundred miles further north — sphagnum bogs, open heath barrens, and red spruce whose branches grow only on the leeward side because of the constant west wind. It was clear-cut and burned to bedrock around 1900, then used as a live-fire artillery range in the 1940s, and was designated Wilderness in 1975. It looks and feels like Canada dropped into the mid-Atlantic.

Forest Road 75, Davis, West Virginia, 26260, United States

Open at all times. Forest Road 75, the only vehicle access across the plateau, is unpaved and NOT maintained or plowed in winter — expect it to be impassable from roughly December to spring. No fee, no permit, no facilities.
