Dover Motor Speedway
One Mile High Banked Concrete Oval Opened In 1969 And Known To NASCAR Fans As The Monster Mile, Beside The Bally'S Dover Casino On The North Side Of Delaware'S Capital · Dover, Delaware
Dover Motor Speedway is a one-mile oval on the north edge of Dover, opened in 1969 and known to stock car fans as the Monster Mile. The track is paved with concrete rather than asphalt and banked at about 24 degrees in the turns, which makes cars fast, tyres fragile and crashes frequent; it has a reputation as one of the toughest tracks on the NASCAR calendar. A giant statue of Miles the Monster, the track's mascot, clutching a real car, towers over the entrance plaza. The permanent grandstands still hold a large crowd but are far smaller than at their peak. For decades Dover hosted two NASCAR Cup Series points races a year. For 2026 it lost its points-paying Cup date to North Wilkesboro and instead held the non-points NASCAR All-Star Race in May, with lower-series races on the same weekend; whether a points race returns in 2027 is not known. The Bally's Dover casino and hotel, formerly Dover Downs, sits next to the track, with harness racing inside the oval. Outside race weekends the speedway is mostly closed.

This is an event venue, not an attraction with daily hours. On most days of the year the speedway is closed to the public and there is nothing to see beyond the outside of the grandstands and the Miles the Monster statue at the entrance plaza; do not plan a casual visit expecting a tour. It comes alive on race weekends: for 2026 the main event was the non-points NASCAR All-Star Race on 17 May, with lower-series (O'Reilly/Xfinity and Truck) races the same weekend - confirm the 2027 schedule, which may or may not include a points race. On race days gates, parking lots and campgrounds open many hours before the green flag and close well after the finish, and traffic on US 13 and Route 1 can hold you up for hours, so arrive early. Campgrounds usually open a day or more before the weekend. Tours of the facility or driving experiences are offered only on some dates, if at all - confirm with the track. The Bally's Dover casino next door keeps its own long hours all year, and harness racing there runs in its own season. Rain delays and postponements are common; follow the track's official channels.
