Downtown Reno and the Reno Arch
Downtown Reno Casino District Under The Reno Arch ('The Biggest Little City In The World'), First Raised In 1926, With The Truckee River Whitewater Park · Reno, Nevada
Downtown Reno is the older, smaller casino district of northern Nevada, strung along North Virginia Street under the Reno Arch, the lit steel sign that has called Reno 'The Biggest Little City in the World' since the slogan was added to the first arch in 1929. That first arch went up in 1926 to mark the new transcontinental highways through town; the one over the street today dates from 1987. Around it stand the Eldorado, Silver Legacy and Circus Circus, joined by skyways and sold together as The Row, plus older hotels, pawn shops, wedding chapels and bars. Two blocks south the Truckee River runs through the Riverwalk District, where a whitewater park fills with tubers and kayakers in summer, and beyond it Midtown has murals, breweries and restaurants. Reno is not the Las Vegas Strip: it is cheaper, quieter and rougher in places, with visible homelessness on some blocks after dark. Its value is as an affordable base for Lake Tahoe, Virginia City and Pyramid Lake, and for the city's museums and big summer festivals.

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The typical pattern: the arch, Virginia Street and the Riverwalk are public and open around the clock, and the arch is lit from dusk. The casinos on The Row are open 24 hours, though individual restaurants, the Circus Circus midway, showrooms and bars keep their own hours, and some restaurants close on quieter weekdays. Midtown shops open roughly late morning to early evening and bars stay open late. The traps that ruin a trip are booking a weekend that turns out to be Hot August Nights or a big tournament and paying triple, arriving to tube the river in spring runoff when it is too high, driving to Tahoe over the Mount Rose Highway in a winter storm without chains, and walking long distances at 2 am through the rough blocks east of the core. Confirm current times before relying on them.
