Downtown Vicksburg and the Floodwall Murals

Heritage District · Vicksburg, Mississippi

The old town on the bluff above the Mississippi, four miles from the military park and a completely different visit. Thirty-two murals by Robert Dafford cover the river floodwall, telling the city's history along a walkable stretch of the waterfront. Behind them are the 1858 courthouse where the United States flag was raised after the surrender, the building where Coca-Cola was first bottled in 1894, and a downtown of antebellum houses. The river itself left in 1876, cutting a new channel and stranding the port; the Yazoo was diverted into the old bed in 1903 to give the city its waterfront back.

Washington Street, Vicksburg, Mississippi, 39180, United States
