Drake Well Museum and Park

National Historic Landmark · Titusville, Pennsylvania

The spot on Oil Creek where Edwin Drake struck oil at sixty-nine feet on 27 August 1859, using a driven iron pipe to hold back the gravel — the technique that made drilling for oil possible and started the petroleum industry. Within a year the valley was a forest of derricks, within fifteen it had produced boom towns that no longer exist, and the whole modern world followed from it. A replica of the engine house and derrick stands on the original well site, and the museum beside it is the definitive collection on the birth of the industry.
