Driehaus Museum

Specialty Museum · Chicago, Illinois

The Samuel M. Nickerson House of 1883, built by a banker who had watched the city burn twelve years earlier and responded by constructing almost the entire interior in stone, marble and onyx — it was known as the Marble Palace. The financier Richard Driehaus bought it, spent years restoring it and opened it in 2008 as a museum of the Gilded Age, furnished with Tiffany glass and period decorative arts. It is the most complete surviving interior of its kind in Chicago.
