Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge and Canal Park
Iconic Bridge · Duluth, Minnesota
The symbol of Duluth: a steel bridge over the ship canal into Lake Superior whose entire 386-foot span rises 135 feet in under a minute to let vessels through, several thousand times a year. It was built in 1905 as a rare aerial transporter bridge carrying a suspended gondola, and rebuilt as a vertical lift in 1929. Canal Park around it is the old warehouse district turned to hotels, restaurants and a lakewalk, and the whole point of standing there is watching thousand-foot ore carriers come in under the raised span, close enough to read the name.
600 South Lake Avenue, Duluth, Minnesota, 55802, United States
The bridge, the piers and the Lakewalk are free and open at all hours. The bridge closes briefly to traffic and pedestrians for each lift. The Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center is free and keeps seasonal hours, and posts the day's expected ship arrivals and departures. The shipping season runs roughly late March to mid-January, and lifts are far less frequent in deep winter.
